Neologic synagogue. The building was designed in 1928 by the internationally renowned German architect Professor Peter Behrens. The building is a masterpiece of functionalism with the application of Moorish elements. The ground floor forms the base, which is clad in stone facing that has a massive static appearance like the fortress architecture of the Middle Ages. The architect was inspired by Rachel's Tomb, which is located between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The synagogue was built between 1929 and 1931 on the site of an old synagogue from 1861. The dome of the synagogue is 16 metres in diameter and 17 and a half metres high. On its top and in the four corners were placed six-pointed stars, which were removed in 1942. The building is one of the most unique architectural monuments and puts Žilina on the map of modern world architecture.
