KDE TO SOM

About the project

One shared database of places of interest.

  • QR codes at monuments
  • Data for an audio guide
  • Places of interest on the site of a town or a tourism organisation
  • Events shared onto your website

A place of interest can be anything — a natural feature, a monument, a public amenity, a cycle route or an event. KDETOSOM lets you build a tailor-made tourist guide to your area, complete with spoken commentary or a foreign language version.

This portal shows the contents of that database the way a visitor sees it. The places were entered by villages, towns, tourism organisations and people who know their own region — with a photograph, a description, a position and, where one exists, a spoken guide.

Who it is for

  • Towns, villages and local authorities
  • Regional and county tourism organisations
  • Destination portals and travel websites
  • Accommodation and catering businesses
  • Schools and classroom teaching
  • Associations and regional enthusiasts

What the KDETOSOM system does

KDETOSOM is a complete management system for places of interest. You maintain your own places in it and then use them on your own websites or in your own applications.

Places of interest by village, town and region

Besides coordinates, every place carries its local and regional affiliation, so the list can be filtered by Slovakia's administrative divisions.

Interactive guide

Grouping places of interest produces a guide with a map and spoken commentary, which can exist in several language versions.

Language versions

An integrated system of automated translation and voiceover generation. Human proofreaders are available as an additional service.

Audio commentary

Spoken commentary is supported natively for every place. We can generate the voiceover automatically, or attach recordings you already have.

Nature trails and cycle routes

Places can be grouped into lists of your own — a "regional top 20", a nature trail, a cycle route with its elevation profile. GPX files are supported too, and we draw the whole route from them.

Events

Add events from your town or region to the database and display them on your own website — including events from neighbouring municipalities.

POI and GPX map generator

The system generates a map on your website with the places you choose marked on it, and can draw a route from a GPX file.

Current weather

Every place shows the current weather and the forecast for the coming days, which makes planning a day out that much easier.

Google Places integration

A place can be paired with its Google entry, which automatically adds opening hours, visitor ratings and photographs.

National heritage database

An internal database of over 10,000 cultural monuments and 17,000 heritage structures. Linking one to a place adds fuller information automatically. With thanks to the Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic.

An API for your application

If the ready-made visual output is not enough, the system has an API through which you can pull the data for a mobile application or a destination portal.

Navigation via Google Maps or Waze

Every place can be navigated to through Google Maps or Waze, whichever the visitor prefers.

What it sounds like

Spoken commentary can be generated in ten languages. Listen to a sample — nothing downloads until you press one.

Data worth sharing

The data is held centrally. A village website therefore also shows places from neighbouring villages — and conversely, your places are returned by proximity searches on both nearby and distant portals.

The effect is that you gradually gain richer content from everyone else using the system, while your own content is distributed without effort. Awareness of your monuments, attractions and cultural events grows with it.

We are not an app, though we can look like one

Our aim is not to build yet another destination portal or application, but to process and supply the material for your web projects. KDETOSOM is the technical infrastructure that stores places of interest and serves them by category, by coordinates or by municipality.

That saves the time and the money you would otherwise spend gathering photographs and facts, entering them into pages, and commissioning bespoke filtering.

API and putting it on your site

There are two ways to get places out of the database and onto your pages: a ready-made display you drop in with a single line, or the raw data over the API if you would rather build the look yourself.

One script tag

You put a single <script> tag where the output should appear. We take care of the rest.

  • About 27 kB including the styles — plain JavaScript, no libraries
  • Renders in the visitor's browser, so your server carries none of it
  • Data loads in the background; the page never reloads
  • Configured with attributes: categories, radius, count, language, starting coordinates
  • Responsive, and the colours can be matched to your site

API

A read-only HTTP interface answering in JSON. Each response carries a "meta" header and a "data" array; photo and audio addresses are assembled from values in that header, so no media host is ever written into your code.

  • A list of places, a single place, the categories, trails and their stops, events, territory lists
  • Filters: category, village, district, county, region, number of records
  • Ten languages — the text and the category names come back translated
  • Given the visitor's coordinates, results come sorted by distance with the distance attached to each place
  • Access is by subscription, through a token tied to your domain
