56 Svojdomov

There was a shortage of flats in the town of Žilina and so the Svojdomov cooperative took the initiative to build new houses. The implementation plan was drawn up by the architect and engineer Žigo Vavrín Wertheimer. Construction began in 1931 and a total of 48 houses were built. The whole set of buildings stands out for its then modern view of the way of living, as well as for the materials and constructions used. The houses were built in four rows separated by streets, forming enclosed blocks. Houses were built around the perimeter, with gardens inside the blocks. The street fencing was designed by architect Július Stein, who also designed a standard house with a semicircular staircase. The functionalist urban district of Svojdomov is one of the most important monuments of modern architecture in Slovakia.
