106 Braun House

Braun House. It is the only house that has survived from the original development on the edge of today's Andrej Hlinka Square. A large part of this quarter disappeared due to the construction of the Prior department store and another part, together with the old rectory, had to give way to another shopping centre. The project of the Art Nouveau house for the Žilina lawyer Arpad Braun, a doctor of law, was drawn up in 1909 by the architect Izidor Szerdahelyi. The house had a basement and three floors. In 1928, the cellars and lighting were reconstructed according to the plans of architect Zweigenthal. The house had large commercial rooms on the ground floor, which were mainly used by banks. Braun's house is not a typical example of Art Nouveau architecture, but it retains a certain elegance and dignity from it, and the architect managed the corner composition of the house very well.
