Andrej Hlinka Square

Andrej Hlinka Square. It fills the space under the parish church, today's Holy Trinity Cathedral, and stands on the river terrace of the Váh. The area was called Pod parárou, later a brewery and a slaughterhouse were built here. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Všivák brook, which is now underground, flowed through the square. In the centre of the square stood the fountain Žilinské virgins by Vladimír Kompánek and today there is the so-called Singing Fountain. An important building was the Hungarian Royal Captaincy - the current Považská Gallery of Art in Žilina. In 1927, the Astória Hotel was built on the corner of the square and Narodna Street. The square, in the past also called Štefánikovo námestie and Námestie SNP, is named after Andrej Hlinka. His bronze statue by academic sculptor Ladislav Berák was unveiled on the seventeenth of September 1994.
