51 Financial Palace
Žilina
Listen to the guide
The Financial Palace is a symbol of Žilina's functionalist architecture and is one of the most important monuments of this period in Slovakia. The building was built between 1930 and 1931 according to the architectural design of Michal Maximilián Scheer. The corner is dominated by a mass of glass staircase. Between the two wings of the building is an atrium, around which the architect placed all the functional operations. In 1949, the four-storey building was extended by one storey, which suppressed the dominance of the semi-cylindrical front staircase. The removal of the awning over the entrance lost the architect's original intent, that is, the lightness of the architecture of the staircase and corner, as did other architectural details. At present, Prima banka Slovensko has its headquarters here.
