It is interesting that the oldest women's association in Slovakia was founded by men by inviting ladies to start their own association through a newspaper and they enthusiastically set to work. Since 1869, they educated women in cooking, child-rearing, but also in culture and finance. They published several magazines and founded their own school in 1919. Three years later, they even established the first nursery school in Slovakia. Although Živena was forcibly dissolved in 1955, its members did not give up and in 1990 the association was re-established. Today it is still developing its activities and has about 1000 women members. Živena has its headquarters in Martin and 12 local organisations in Slovakia.
