Among the dominant features of the square in Banská Bystrica is also a monumental plague column. Originally, the Marian Column, built in 1681, stood on this spot. It was later removed and rebuilt as a plague column in 1719. It was erected as a thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary for saving the town from the plague epidemic.
