35 Bacher's Villa

Bacher's villa. The town villa was built by the well-known Žilina lawyer Ján Milec in 1847. Originally it was a post office, since 1911 it housed a branch of the Credit Bank, which after 1919 was renamed to the Slovak Bank. The director of the Slevenska Bank was Andrej Bacher, who bought the house, hence the name Bacher's Villa. From the twelfth of December 1918, the minister with full powers for the administration of Slovakia, doctor Vavro Šrobár, and his office - the so-called First Slovak Government - were housed here. After the war, the building belonged to the District National Committee and for several years it also housed the Department of Culture of the District National Committee.
