The building of the Municipal Theatre was built between 1942 and 1945 both as the Representation House of the town and as the Roman Catholic Folk School. The new building in the style of Italian neoclassicism was designed by architects Ferdinand Čapka and František Eduard Bednárik. The building was finally built according to the design of architect Otto Reichner. Since 1950 the Regional Theatre Žilina has been operating here. The professional theatre in Žilina was established on 1 January 1992, when the City of Žilina established the Municipal Theatre. The building of the present theatre was built on the site of the former town church school, which had stood here since the fourteenth century.
