Museum of the Liptov Village
Pribylina
Listen to the guide
The Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina is a unique open-air museum, which came into being due to an unfortunate, but at the same time beneficial circumstance. When the Liptovská Mara dam was being built in the 1970s, many historical buildings found themselves underwater. However, the most valuable ones were saved and moved to Pribilina, where the museum was opened to the public in 1991. What makes this museum special is its layout. Unlike other open-air museums, it is not a random collection of houses, but an authentic reconstruction of a medieval Liptov town with its privileges and rights. Among the wooden folk buildings, which represent the life of peasants and craftsmen, two precious stone jewels stand out. The first is the Gothic-Renaissance manor house of Parížovce from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, the oldest preserved peasant residence in Liptov. It is associated with the personality of King Matthias Corvinus and his son Jan Korvín. The second treasure is the early Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary from the original village of Liptovská Mara with fragments of wall paintings from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The museum offers a glimpse into the life of different social classes at the turn of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth century. You can see the dwellings of the landless, peasants, craftsmen and the municipal richtars. There are also domestic animals, including Hucul horses that you can ride. Since 2020, the almost kilometre-long Považská Forest Railway has been running here, which adds to the authentic atmosphere of the place.
