Museum of Slovak Village

Martin

Listen to the guide

The largest museum of folk architecture in Slovakia is located in Jahodníčky háje near Martin. On an area of fifteen and a half hectares there are one hundred and forty-three historical buildings from Orava, Liptov, Kysuce and the surrounding area. These buildings date from the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century and show how people once lived in traditional Slovak villages. The museum was built gradually. The first idea came as early as 1930, but the first building was not moved here until 1940. The exhibition opened to the public in 1972. Among the most precious buildings are the peasant farmhouse from Vyšný Kubín from 1748 or the peasant house from Zázrivá with a traditional bell-ringing workshop. The guided tour lasts about an hour and a half. In the area you will also find a traditional tavern, where you can refresh yourself, and a church from Rudno with beautiful paintings. The museum is open all year round except Mondays in low season. The Strawberry Trees themselves have an interesting history. They were first mentioned in 1258. In 1919 they became part of Martin. The original village buildings were demolished in the 1970s and replaced by prefabricated houses.
