The Strečno Castle, which rises on a limestone cliff about four hundred and twenty metres above sea level, is an important historical monument of the Central Povazie region. Although only ruins remain today, its stone walls tell the story of the development of the medieval fortress from the Gothic to the Baroque period. The first written references to the castle date back to the year one thousand three hundred and eighty-three, although archaeological findings prove that the area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, and later also during the Iron Age and the Slavonic era, when a wooden fortress probably stood here.
The castle belonged to many prominent noble families, including the Pongrác family, Paul Kiniži, the Kostkov family, the Dershfi family and the Vešeleni family. However, its fate was finally sealed at the end of the seventeenth century when it was demolished by order of Emperor Leopold I. Today, the castle has been partially restored and is open to the public. The exhibitions present archaeological findings from various periods, including prehistoric times, and the military history of the castle. Visitors can see the restored main gate, towers, palaces and chapel. An interesting part of the tour is the medieval torture chamber with torture instruments on display, which recall the dark side of the past. In the year two thousand and twenty-three a new interactive exhibition was opened. The first part is dedicated to the owners and keepers of the castle, whose story is presented through a video story by an important personality connected with the castle, Žofia Bosniaková. The second part focuses on the military history of the castle and also contains entertaining elements such as a shadow play and a costume mirror. There is also an authentic medieval village of Paseka next to the castle, which faithfully depicts life in the past.
The houses of the baker, fisherman, healer and pilgrims, together with a working bell tower and well, complete the overall impression and bring the atmosphere of the time closer. Strečno Castle is therefore not only an interesting historical monument, but also a place where one can get a glimpse into the life of past centuries and understand the development of the region on the banks of the Váh River.
