Žilina

Listen to the guide

Holy Trinity Cathedral. It was first mentioned in 1423, when Štefan Langworst, a townsman from Žilina, donated part of his property to the church, which was then dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was gradually rebuilt several times, especially after many fires in the town. The single-nave church stood here from the beginning of the second half of the 13th century until the beginning of the 14th century. In the 14th century, a three-nave basilica with a polygonal presbytery was built. The parish church was consecrated to the Holy Trinity at the end of the 16th century - in 1586. In 1610, the so-called Synod of Žilina was held here, which was convened by the Hungarian Palatine Juraj Thurzo and was an important event of the Evangelical Church in Slovakia. Today it is the seat church of the Žilina bishopric.
