The origin of the Hontian Museum in Šahy dates back to 1902. Its establishment was initiated by the Hontian County Museum Society headed by Elemér Pongrácz. Today the museum is a municipal museum. There are exhibitions of ethnography and history of the Hontian region. The museum is also engaged in archaeological research of the region, organizes social science lectures and excursions. There is also a library in the building, consisting of a historical library and a modern scientific library. In the courtyard there is a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.
