Šahy

Listen to the guide

The Premonstratensian church and monastery is the oldest and most precious cultural and historical monument of the former centre of the Hospitaller stool, Šiauliai. It is a complex of the massive two-towered Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the former Premonstratensian monastery, of which only one smaller building next to the church has been preserved. Its origins date back to the thirteenth century and its consecration was attended by King Belo the Fourth of Hungary himself. During the Turkish wars, the monastery complex was severely damaged. It was only rebuilt in the eighteenth century in the modern Baroque style.
