The first building of the Slovak Matica
Martin
Listen to the guide
This national cultural monument is a kind of symbol of the town of Martin. The Slovak Matica was founded in 1863, symbolically on the thousandth anniversary of the arrival of the saints Cyril and Methodius to Slovakia. However, at that time there was no larger building in Martin in which such a gathering could take place, so a makeshift wooden shelter was built on the square. The town immediately provided land for the construction of a building to represent the institution, and after many problems the building was completed - but not until 1900. Today it houses the Literary Museum of the Slovak National Library.
